One of the most common and reprehensible uses of plastics in the world, including India, is as packing material. Polythene bags came into our markets only as late as 1982 but they have given such a beating to our recycled newspaper bags as that one hardly sees the latter now.
Polythene bags have often caused the death of infants around the world. Babies love to cover their heads with polythene bags a part of their play but cannot remove them from their heads and often die of suffocation, since air will not pass through polythene. It is mandatory for such plastic bags to carry warnings about them being used as playthings for children. Most plastic toys are also required to be made of non-toxic material and carry declaration to that effect.
The same is the fate of fish and other marine life, when polythene finds its way into the waters, as it often does. Plastics indeed pose a sticky disposal problem for the world at large. You cannot burn it, you cannot bury it. Throwing it away, clogs the arteries of the system. So, you just cannnot get rid of it, once it is produced. It has enveloped your life. And Leonard of the internationally known environmental group ‘Greenpeace’ states, “Substantial amount of toxic chemicals released in plastic production can cause cancer and congenital defects and damage the nervous system, blood, kidneys and immunity systems. These chemicals can also cause serious damage to the ecosystem.”

The Two Friends and the Bear
Once upon a time, two friends were passing through a dense forest. They promised to stand by each other in times of danger. Suddenly, they saw a large bear coming towards them.
Terrified, one of the friends instantly ran and climbed up a nearby tree. He did not care to save his companion. The other friend did not know how to climb trees. Using his common sense, he lay flat on the ground and held his breath, pretending to be dead. He knew that bears do not touch dead creatures.
The bear came up to him, smelt his face, ears, and head. It thought the man was dead and quietly walked away into the forest.
After the bear disappeared, the friend from the tree came down. He asked his friend with a smile, “What did the bear whisper in your ears?” The other friend replied, “The bear advised me to beware of friends who run away in danger.”
Moral: A friend in need is a friend indeed.
8. Processing/Paragraph Writing (10 Marks)
Preparation of Potato Chips
Potato chips are a very delicious and popular snack. It can be easily prepared at home or in a factory through a step-by-step process. At first, fresh and high-quality potatoes are collected from the market. Next, the damaged or rotten potatoes are sorted out and discarded. The selected good potatoes are then thoroughly cleaned with fresh water to remove dirt. After that, they are sliced into thin round pieces using a slicer machine. In the next step, required salt and different spices are added to the sliced potatoes to enhance the taste. Then, these seasoned slices are deep-fried in hot oil until they turn golden and crispy. Finally, the crispy potato chips are cooled down, packed into airtight packets, and labelled properly. Now, they are completely ready to be sold in the market.
