(Lesson 1, Tales of Bhola Grandpa)

Bhola Grandpa and his wife lived at the western end of our village. A large bokal tree overshadowed their hut. In the bokal tree lived a small troop of monkeys. Bhola Grandpa and his wife did not mind it. One moonlit night, we were returning from a festival. The road was long and foggy. I was riding on the village chowkidar’s shoulders. Suddenly Bhola Grandpa let out a loud wail. Everyone in our party was surprised. We halted Enquiry revealed that Bhola Grandpa had taken his grandson to the festival. He had tightly held on to the two fingers of the boy. He did not realize when those fingers slipped out.

3. Read the following text and answer the questions below :

After inventing dynamite, Swedish -born Alfred Nobel became a very rich man. However, he foresaw its destructive powers too late. Nobel preferred not to be remembered as the inventor of dynamite. So in 1895, just two weeks before his death, he created a fund to be used for awarding prizes to people who had made worthwhile contributions to mankind. Originally there were five awards: Literature, Physics,
Chemistry, Medicine and Peace. Economics was added in 1968.

PREPARATION OF ORANGE JUICE

Orange juice is a healthy drink.It is a very interesting matter to know how orange juice is prepared.It can be prepared at home quite easily. The preparation of orange juice involves various stages. At first,oranges are bought from the market. Then the oranges are sorted. Next, the rotten ones are removed. After that,the rest of them are cleaned well with fresh water. Later, the cleaned oranges are peeled.Now, the peeled oranges are put into the juicer. In this way the juice is extracted. Later on sugar and preservatives are added to it and the juice is poured in bottles. Then the bottles are sealed properly to keep usable for a long time. Finally, the bottles with orange juice are ready to be sold in the market.

Title : A Horrible Bus Journey

The students were returning from their educational excursion by bus. The journey was supposed to be a night one, and they were all tired and sleepy. Suddenly, the bus broke down and the tires punctured. They had to wait for two long hours at a lonely place with no signs of any help. The students were scared and didn’t know what to do.

Finally, a kind passerby stopped and offered to help. He changed the tires and got the bus moving again. The students were grateful for his help and continued their journey. They reached their destination late, but safe and sound. The incident taught them to always be prepared for the unexpected and to appreciate the kindness of strangers.
