ACTIVITY 1

Rearrange the following sentences in the correct order and put the numbers in the given boxes:

(1) Subhas and Sisir chose the wanderer of their journey. [6]

Ans: Subhas and Sisir drove through the main gate in most natural fashion because they could elude whatever suspicions of the British soldiers keeping a watch on Subhas.

Ans. Muhammad Ziauddin was Subhas Candra Bose in reality.

(c) Why do you think Subhas had to put on a false identify ?

Ans. Because I think Subhas ji surely decided to free from his house arrest and therefore he had to put on a false identity.

Answer the following questions :

(a) In which direction did Sisir drive after leaving Elgin Road ?

Ans. After leaving Elgin Road he drove the Car to Howrah Bridge.

(b) Who was Ashok ? How did he help in Subhas’s escape ?

Ans. Ashok was the brother of Sisir Kumar Bose. He was a trusted family member who supported the freedom movement indirectly.

When Subhas Chandra Bose escaped from British surveillance, Ashok helped him by giving shelter. Subhas stayed for a short time in Ashok’s house, which helped him continue his escape safely from India.

(c) Describe Sisir’s last sight of Subhas.

Ans. When Subhas and Sisir decided to escape from India, they first bought some clothes so that they could travel in disguise. Then Sisir picked Subhas up in his Wanderer car and they reached Gomoh Station on a moonlit night. Before parting, Subhas spoke a few final words to Sisir. Sisir then watched Subhas climb the railway overbridge and walk along it with his usual majestic and confident gait. This was the last sight Sisir had of Subhas.

(d) Why did Sisir pick Subhas up in his Car a little further from Ashok’s house ?

Ans. Because Subhas was unknown to Ashok who only knew him as Muhammad Ziauddin in order to keep the identification belonging to Subhas secret. And so Sisir was able to pick up Subhas in his car a little further from Ashok’s house.

Write a summary of the following passage:

Mahatma Gandhi was very honest from his childhood. He never resorted to any unfair action. One day, while Gandhi was in school, an Inspector of schools came on a visit. The Inspector entered the classroom where Gandhi was sitting with other students. The Inspector gave a couple of English spellings to the students to write. Gandhi had written one incorrect spelling. The class teacher noticed this and indicated with his eyes to Gandhi to copy the correct spelling from another student’s exercise book. But he did not do this. After the Inspector left, the class teacher scolded him for not following his instruction. Gandhi replied bravely that copying was dishonest and that is why he had not done it. (119 words)

Summary : Mahatma Gandhi was honest from childhood. When a school inspector tested his class, Gandhi wrote one spelling incorrectly. Though his teacher hinted that he should copy from another student, Gandhi refused. He believed copying was dishonest and bravely explained this to his teacher later.
