Scientists have recently reported that the polar ice caps are melting. This is due to a rise in temperatures known as the Greenhouse Effect. According to Melvin Calvin, who won the Nobel Prize for earlier research, carbon dioxide is given off when coal and oil are burnt. This gas accumulates in the atmosphere and causes temperature to rise. As a result, the ice covering the North and South poles melts and this may eventually lead to a rise in sea levels which could flood many areas of the world.
