1. Read the following text and answer the question given below.

(Lesson – 2, Clouds)

And it saddened him to think that he had fallen asleep. Had he stayed awake, perhaps, the clouds would not have disappeared like that. It would have been the season’s first rainfall. The month of the rains was slipping away. He looked up once again at the skies. Not a single patch of cloud. The sun beat down on his head from a clear sky. In the fierce heat, he walked between the fields. His body was on fire, his throat dry. After crossing several fields, he saw a large tree in whose shade a persian wheel turned gently. It was like he had reached an oasis in the middle of a desert. He reached the shelter of the tree and splashed the cool water from the Persian wheel on his dusty feet. Then he washed his hands and face and drank his fill.

2. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:

Tansen held a high position in Akbar’s court. This was not liked by many. Once they planned to finish him in a clever way. They requested Akbar to ask Tansen to sing Deepak Raag. it is a wonderful Raag. When sung properly, it makes the atmosphere so warm that gradually the Deepak or lamp will catch fire and ultimately the singer himself will die out of immense heat. Akbar was ignorant about this effect of the Raag. So he ordered Tansen to sing Deepak. Tansen knew that it was almost a death sentence for him. But how could he disobey the emperor? Fortune favours the brave. He was not born to turn his back at unseen dangers. He taught his daughters Saraswati and Rupabati, a disciple of Haridas Swami, the Raag Meghamathar which brings rain.

On that fateful day, Tansen began the alaap, the air became warm. As the tempo of the Raag increased, birds died. People cried in horror as flames shot up everywhere and the unlit lamp burned. Tansen himself was gasping for breath. At that moment Saraswati and Rupabati began singing Raag Meghamalhar. Rain came down and everything was all right again.

[Hints : Two friends passing through a forest — A bear came — One friend climbed a tree — The other could not climb the tree — Helpless — Lay down like a dead man — Bear came near the man — Thought he was dead — Went away.]

Ans: Once, two friends were passing through a forest. Suddenly, they saw a bear approaching. One friend quickly climbed a nearby tree, but the other did not know how to climb. Feeling helpless, he lay down on the ground and held his breath, pretending to be a dead man. The bear came near him, sniffed his ears, and thought he was dead. Since bears do not touch dead creatures, it quietly went away. The man was saved.
