READING COMPREHENSION (SEEN)

1. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:

(Lesson – 4, The Great Escape)

It was 1.35 am. The night was moonlit. Subhas and Sisir hugged the inner wall of the long house-corridor and tiptoed down the back stairs to the car. Subhas sat in the back, Sisir drove the car. He started the engine and drove out from 38/2 Elgin Road as he had done on so many past occasions. At Subhas’s Elgin Road residence. The light glowed in his bedroom to give the impression that he was still there. As Calcutta slept, uncle and nephew crossed Howrah Bridge and went beyond the city’s precincts. Subhas poured Sisir coffee from a thermos. They shared a few anxious moments together when the ear engine faltered once. It started again and Sisir dashed at high speed through the dark night.

বঙ্গানুবাদঃ তখন রাত্রী ১টা ৩৫ মিনিট। রাতটা ছিল চন্দ্রালোকিত। সুভাষ আর শিশির লম্বা ঘরের বারান্দার ভেতরের দেয়ালের গা ঘেঁষে পা টিপে টিপে পেছনের সিঁড়ি বেয়ে গাড়ির কাছে পৌঁছালেন। সুভাষ পিছনের সিটে বসলেন এবং শিশির গাড়ি চালালেন। শিশির ইঞ্জিন চালু করলেন এবং 38/2, এলগিন রোড থেকে গাড়ি চালিয়ে বেরিয়ে গেলেন; যেমন তিনি অতীতে অনেকবার করেছেন। সুভাষের এলগিন রোডের বাসায়, তার বেডরুমে আলো জ্বলছিল এটা বোঝাতে যে তিনি এখনও সেখানেই আছেন। কলকাতা ঘুমিয়ে পড়লে, কাকা- ভাইপো হাওড়া ব্রিজ পার হয়ে শহরের সীমানার বাইরে চলে যান। সুভাষ ফ্লাস্ক থেকে কফি ঢেলে সিসিরকে দিলেন। গাড়ির ইঞ্জিন একবার বিকল হয়ে গেলে তারা দুজনেই মুহূর্তের জন্য উদ্বিগ্ন হয়ে পড়লেন। এটি আবার চালু হতেই সিসির অন্ধকার রাতের মধ্য দিয়ে দ্রুত গতিতে গাড়ি ছোটালেন।

2. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below:

Penicillin is one of the most useful drugs invented by man. With its help, we can heal wounds caused by bacteria which cannot be otherwise healed. In the beginning, very few people knew of this wonderful discovery or its uses. First the scientists and then the ministers of governments were interested in it. Since penicillin could save the wounded soldiers, it was helpful in war. So, they decided to encourage the process of manufacturing. Vast factories were set up for preparing it. Lives of hundreds and thousands of soldiers were saved with its help. Most people benefitted from it. Penicillin when introduced into the streams of the human blood, acts as an aid to those parts which are always fighting the deadly germs. It does not have power over every kind of bacteria, but certain kinds are destroyed by penicillin in the great majority of cases.

বঙ্গানুবাদ : পেনিসিলিন মানুষের আবিষ্কৃত সবচেয়ে উপকারী ওষুধগুলোর একটি। এর সাহায্যে আমরা ব্যাকটেরিয়ার কারণে সৃষ্ট এমন ক্ষত সারাতে পারি, যা অন্যভাবে সারানো সম্ভব নয়। শুরুর দিকে খুব অল্প সংখ্যক মানুষ এই বিস্ময়কর আবিষ্কার এবং এর ব্যবহার সম্পর্কে জানত। প্রথমে বিজ্ঞানীরা এবং পরে সরকারের মন্ত্রীরা এতে আগ্রহী হন। যেহেতু পেনিসিলিন আহত সৈনিকদের জীবন রক্ষা করতে পারত, তাই এটি যুদ্ধে খুবই সহায়ক ছিল। ফলে এর উৎপাদন প্রক্রিয়াকে উৎসাহিত করার সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হয়। এটি প্রস্তুতের জন্য বিশাল বিশাল কারখানা স্থাপন করা হয়। এর সাহায্যে শত শত ও হাজার হাজার সৈনিকের জীবন রক্ষা পায়। অধিকাংশ মানুষই এর দ্বারা উপকৃত হয়েছে।

পেনিসিলিন যখন মানবদেহের রক্তপ্রবাহে প্রবেশ করে, তখন এটি শরীরের সেই অংশগুলোর সহায়ক হিসেবে কাজ করে, যা সর্বদা মারাত্মক জীবাণুর বিরুদ্ধে লড়াই করে। এটি সব ধরনের ব্যাকটেরিয়ার ওপর কার্যকর নয়, তবে নির্দিষ্ট কিছু প্রকারের ব্যাকটেরিয়া অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রে পেনিসিলিন দ্বারা ধ্বংস হয়।

Once upon a time, a war started between England and France. In the war many English soldiers were imprisoned. After many days, one of the soldiers was released and he returned home. One day he was going to the market. Then he saw a bird-seller carrying a few cages, full of birds. Seeing the condition of the poor birds, the soldier took pity on them. Then he remembered his own condition in the French prison. The soldier bought all the cages and set the birds free. The bird-seller said to the soldier, “Why did you release the birds?” The soldier said, “I was once captivated.

So, I know the miseries of the captivity”
