1. Read the text carefully and answer the questions that follow :

You never saw such a commotion up and down a house in all your life, as when my Uncle Podger undertook to do a job. A picture would have come home from the frame-makers, and be standing in the dining-room, waiting to be put up. Aunt Podger would ask what was to be done with it, and Uncle Podger would say: “Oh, you leave that to me. Don’t you, any of you, worry yourselves about that. I’ll do all that. “And then he would take off his coat, and begin. He would send the girl out for sixpen’orth of nails, and then one of the boys after her to tell her what size to get.

“Now you go and get me my hammer, Will,” he would shout, “and you bring me the rule, Tom. I shall want the step-ladder, and I had better have a kitchen-chair, too. And don’t you go, Maria, because I shall want somebody to hold me the light. When the girl comes back she must go out again for a bit of picture cord. Tom! Where’s Tom? Tom, you come here; I shall want you to hand me up the picture.”

8. Write a paragraph on Raja Ram Mohan Roy with the help of the following points : 7

[Points: Born: May 22, 1772 – Parents: Ramakanta Roy and Tarini Devi – Education : learnt Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit – Achievement: abolished the cruel custom of ‘Sati’, wrote books on various subjects – Death: September 27, 1883.]

RAJA RAMMOHAN ROY

Raja Ram Mohan Roy was born on 22nd May, 1772 in the village Radhanagar, Hooghly, Bengal, India. His father was Ramkanto Roy, who was a Vaishnavite. His mother’s name was Tarini. Raja Ram Mohan Roy took his higher education at Patna, India. He had learnt several languages such as Bangla, Arabic, Persian and Sanskrit only by the age of fifteen.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy was against idol worship. After differences with his father, he left the house. Raja Ram Mohan Roy wandered around the Himalayas and went to Tibet. He went to Varanasi and studied the Vedas, the Upanishads and Hindu philosophy deeply. He passed away on 27th September, 1833.

9. Write a story using the following points : 7

[Points : Boys playing – threw stones at the frogs in the pond – a frog was killed – an old frog asked reason – boys reply only for making fun – old frog says, “Your fun is death to others” – boys ashamed never hurt again.]

THE FROGS AND BOYS

There was a small pond. In the pond there were some frogs. Sometimes, they used to float and make merriment. One day a group of boys were playing beside the pond. Suddenly a boy saw a floating frog. At once he threw a stone aiming at frog. It died at once. The boy was amused. The other boy marked the incident. Soon, they began to throw stones at the frogs. It was fun for them. A number of frogs died. Then an old wish frog came and said, “Boys, it is fun to you, but death to us.” The boys realize their mistakes. They became ashamed.

Moral : What is fun to one is death to another.

My Favourite Season

Winter is my favourite season. It is one of the most important season in India. Winter is the coldest season of the year. In our country, the winter season begins in November and extends till the month of February. In the winter season, the days become very short and the nights are long. During this season, the air is very cold and breezy.

Every morning a thick sheet of fog hides the sun. In winter, people wear warm warm clothes and like hot drinks like tea, coffee, milk, soup etc. The earth looks rough and the trees shed their leaves. Snow falls in hilly areas. This season offers us lots of fresh fruits and vegetables like oranges, bananas, apples, radish, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots and green vegetables.

Winter is a very pleasant season. In winter, different beautiful flowers like rose, dahlia, marigold bloom and they enhance the beauty of this season. It is also a season for travelling. People go to different tourist spots to have vacations and picnics. This season is really a wonderful season with a lot of joy and excitement.
